When you think about consumers we have historically bartered, traded goods and bought them in ancient open markets. Until modern merchants arrived, followed by the retail sector, it has been changing and transforming itself since humanity first saw the needs for necessities. But our older history especially for consumer behaviours can only be speculated on because very little has been captured. In fact we know very little about how retailers even managed through the Spanish Flu 100.
